Immigration Law is the area of law which governs the rights and obligations of foreigners in Cyprus and generally regulates the Cypriot citizenship & residence schemes. The most notable immigration law schemes are:
(i) Cypriot citizenship
Cypriot citizenship can be obtained by individuals who have Cypriot origins or individuals who are spouses of Cypriot citizens. The citizenship can also be obtained by foreigners who have completed 7 years of legal residence in Cyprus.
A new scheme has been recently implemented by which the citizenship can also be obtained by reason of investment, provided that someone invests directly in Cyprus at least €2.000.000,00
(ii) Immigration permits
The most popular immigration permit is the one granted by reason of investment. Some of the main requirements include:
- The purchase of a property in Cyprus at a minimum price of €300.000,00,
- The deposit of a minimum amount of €30.000,00 in a Cypriot bank account for a minimum period of 3 years, and
- A minimum annual income of €30.000,00.
(iii) Entry permits and temporary residence permits for non-EU citizens
These permits are granted to non European citizens who want to come in Cyprus, amongst others, as visitors, employees, students, scientific researchers and asylum seekers.
(iv) Long term residence permits for non-EU citizens
These are 5 year period permits that are granted to non European citizens who have resided legally and continuously in Cyprus for 5 years and who possess valid residence permit.
